UAE version vs international version: is the cheaper one worth it?

Online you'll often see the same phone listed twice, one marked 'UAE version' and a cheaper one marked 'international' or 'global'. Here's what you actually give up with the cheaper one.

What “UAE version” means

A UAE version is a device that a brand's official distributor imported for sale here. In practice that usually means:

What you risk with an international or grey import

RiskWhy it matters
WarrantyMany brands only honour warranty in the country or region of purchase. A AED 300 saving can become a AED 1,500 screen repair.
Seller's “shop warranty”Some sellers offer their own warranty. It's only as good as the shop, and it may not use genuine parts.
SIM / eSIMModels from other markets may have different SIM setups (eSIM-only vs physical SIM). Make sure it works with your e&, du or Virgin plan.
Region featuresSome features or services can be disabled or behave differently on devices from other regions.
Charger & keyboardUS or EU plugs need an adapter. Laptops may come with a keyboard layout you're not used to.

How to check before you pay

  1. Look for “UAE version” or “Middle East version” in the listing title and the specification table, not just in the photos.
  2. Ask the seller in writing: “Is the warranty from the brand in the UAE, or from your shop?”
  3. Check the box for local distributor and regulator labels.
  4. For iPhones, check coverage on Apple's “Check Coverage” page with the serial number after purchase. For other brands, use their warranty-check page.
  5. If the price is far below every authorised retailer, assume it's a grey import until proven otherwise.

When is an international version OK?

It can make sense when the model isn't sold officially here at all (for example, Google Pixel phones), when the saving is big enough to cover a repair, or when you'll mainly use the device in the country it came from. Just go in knowing who will fix it.
