Buying a used phone in the UAE: my 15-point checklist
Used phones can be great value, and they can also be the most expensive mistake you make this year. This is the checklist I'd use myself before handing over cash.
By Ronald · 9+ years selling phones, laptops and telecom plans on UAE shop floors. I write the advice I give customers face to face.
Golden ruleMeet in a public place, check the phone yourself, and never pay before the seller has signed out of their account in front of you.
Before you meet
- Check the price against new and refurbished prices. If it's far cheaper than everyone else, ask why.
- Ask for the purchase invoice or the box with matching serial/IMEI numbers.
- Ask whether it's a UAE version and whether any warranty is left. Here's why that matters.
- Get a rough value with our trade-in estimator so you know a fair price.
When you have the phone in your hand
- Account lock: the seller must sign out of iCloud/Find My (iPhone) or the Samsung/Google account, then reset the phone in front of you.
- IMEI matches: dial *#06# and compare it to the box and invoice.
- Battery health: on iPhone, Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Below about 85% means a battery replacement is coming soon.
- Parts history: on recent iPhones, Settings → General → About shows if the screen, battery or camera has been replaced with non-genuine or unknown parts.
- Screen: open a white image and a black image full screen, and look for spots, lines or burn-in.
- Face ID / fingerprint: set it up. If it fails, the phone has probably been opened.
- Cameras: test every lens, front and back, and record a short video.
- Speakers & mic: make a call and record a voice note.
- Charging: plug it in and check it charges. Wiggle the cable gently.
- SIM / eSIM: test your own SIM or check that eSIM transfer works with your operator.
- Water damage signs: fogging under the camera glass or a corroded charging port.
Fair price guide
As a rule of thumb, iPhones hold their value better than most Android phones. Samsung flagships drop faster but are often a better deal used for the same reason. Use the trade-in estimator as a starting point, then adjust for battery health and condition.
